Lent  &  Easter at  Southminster

Lent is a special time for followers of Jesus as we remember his life, his death, and ultimately his resurrection!  Lent lasts for 40 days and ends on Easter.  During this season followers of Jesus often emphasize spiritual practices such as fasting, prayer, reflection and repentance.

We encourage you to enjoy these opportunities to grow in your faith and fellowship during this season.

Join us in these special events that help us prepare our hearts, our family, and our community for Easter and the empty tomb.

  • Lenten Music for Contemplation

During Lent our Chapel Choir records short music pieces for prayer and contemplation to help us grow in faith and center ourselves on God.

    Ash Wednesday Service  |  February 22 - 7:00 p.m.

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent.  During this service we remember how fragile our life is, and how we are dust and one day we will return to dust.  It is a service that is usually more solemn in nature.

At Southminster each person has the chance to receive the Imposition of Ashes, which means to have ashes marked on your forehead (or hand) in the shape of a cross as a reminder of our calling to follow the same path as Jesus.

  • Palm Sunday  | April 2 | 10:30 a.m.

On Palm Sunday we remember Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem for the last time.  During this service the children process into the Sanctuary waving palm branches and lay them at the front as they sing "Hosanna!"

  • Maundy Thursday  Service | April 6 | 7 p.m.

On Maundy Thursday we remember the Last Supper,  Jesus' last meal with his disciples before he was arrested.  During this service we join in communion together, and the service ends with the stripping of the communion table as we prepare for Good Friday.

  • Good Friday Prayer Vigil | April 7 | 2-4:00 p.m.

On Good Friday, we will be holding a prayer vigil in the Sanctuary from 2-4 p.m. as we remember the last and most painful part of Jesus' journey to the cross. During this time, we may reflect upon the stories of Jesus' last hours on earth leading up to his crucifixion. We remember that death did not have the final say on that day as we prepare to look toward Easter.

  • Pancake breakfast activity image

    Pancake Breakfast | Saturday, April 8 | 8:30 a.m.

Jesus is alive!  Join us to celebrate this good news.  We'll begin with a pancake breakfast (pancakes, sausage, juice) in the courtyard followed by Easter crafts in the Choir Room (next to the Sanctuary in the church building).  Bring your phones and camera for picture opportunities!

We'll have 3 Easter Egg Hunts!  Please bring your own baskets.  The hunts will run about the same time.

    • Preschool (3 YO & below) on the toddler playground in the courtyard.  These eggs will contain animal crackers and goldfish
    • Ages 4-5-6 near the Transportation Highway playground (back side of the school).
    • Ages 7-8-9-10 on the church lawn and large playground.

  • Easter Services | Sunday April 9 at 7:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.

Jesus is ALIVE!  Join us for worship as we declare that Jesus is resurrected, and sin has been defeated!

At 7:00 a.m. we'll gather on our front lawn (on the labyrinth) for our Sunrise Service as we remember that the Son rose on Easter morning.  This service will be shorter than our typical service, but just as meaningful.  No childcare is provided during this service.

At 10:30 a.m. we'll gather to celebrate Jesus' resurrection in our Sanctuary.  Join us for a special day of singing, praising and testifying to what God has done through Jesus Christ.  Our nursery (0-35 months) will be open for this service and we will have an exciting Easter lesson for pre-school kids (3 YO--Bridge) in the Puppies & Kittens room in the preschool hallway.
