Lent & Easter at  Southminster

Lent is a special time for followers of Jesus as we remember his life, his death, and ultimately his resurrection!  Lent lasts for 40 days and ends on Easter.  During this season followers of Jesus often emphasize spiritual practices such as fasting, prayer, reflection and repentance.

We encourage you to enjoy these opportunities to grow in your faith and fellowship during this season.

Join us in these special events that help us prepare our hearts, our family, and our community for Easter and the empty tomb.

  • Lenten Daily Devotionals

During Lent people in our church family, members, leaders and pastors write daily devotionals to help us grow in faith and center ourselves on God.  Join our email list to receive these devotionals.

  • Watch The Chosen Together: Thursdays at 6:30 p.m.

Please join us for a new weekly ministryThe Chosen & Pizza, starting on Thursday, March 10th at 6:30pm.  We offer you a new way to connect with each other, learn more about God, the Bible and faith, and eat!

We will gather in the Sanctuary at Southminster on Thursdays to eat together while watching and then discussing The Chosen. You might have already heard of The Chosen, the largest ever crowd-funded project that presents the story of Jesus through the eyes of his disciples.

Everyone is encouraged to come--invite neighbors and bring the kids!  It's free (donations accepted) and there's no homework. Please let us know in advance (email pdrake@southminpres.org) if you need child care or other special needs that you may have. If you have any questions, email us or call (281-499-2310).  We look forward to seeing you each week!

Ash Wednesday Service: March 2 at 6:30 p.m.

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent. During this service we remember how fragile our life is, and how we are dust and one day we will return to dust.  It is a service that is usually more solemn in nature.

At Southminster, each person has the chance to receive the Imposition of Ashes, which means to have ashes marked on your forehead (or hand) in the shape of a cross as a reminder of our calling to follow the same path as Jesus.

  • Palm Sunday: April 10 at 10:30 a.m.

On Palm Sunday, we remember Jesus' entry into Jerusalem for the last time.  During this service, the children process into the Sanctuary waving palm branches and lay them at the front as they sing "Hosanna!"

  • Good Friday Prayer Vigil: April 15 | 3--4:00 p.m.

On Good Friday, we remember the last and most painful part of Jesus' journey to the cross.  During this time, we may reflect upon the stories of Jesus' last hours on earth leading up to his crucifixion.  We remember that death did not have the final say on that day as we prepare to look toward Easter.

  • Pancake breakfast activity image

    Saturday Pancake Breakfast: April 16 from 8:30 -10:00 a.m.

Jesus is alive!  Join us to celebrate this good news.  We'll begin with a pancake breakfast (pancakes, sausage, juice) in the courtyard followed by Easter crafts in the Multipurpose Room (next to the Sanctuary in the church building), including a visit from the Easter Bunny. Bring your phones and camera for picture opportunities!

We'll have 3 Easter Egg Hunts! Please bring your own baskets. We will begin with youngest kids first.

  • Easter Sunday Services: April 17 at 7:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.

Jesus is ALIVE!  Join us for worship as we declare that Jesus is resurrected and sin has been defeated!

At 7:00 a.m. we'll gather on our front lawn (at the Labyrinth) for our Sunrise Service as we remember that the Son rose on Easter morning.  This service will be shorter than our typical service, but just as meaningful.  No childcare is provided during this service.

At 10:30 a.m. we'll gather in our Sanctuary to celebrate Jesus' resurrection.  Join us for a triumphant morning of singing, praising and testifying to what God has done through Jesus Christ.  Our nursery (0-35 months) will be open for this service and we will have a special Easter lesson for preschool kids (3 YO--Bridge) in the Puppies & Kittens room in the preschool hallway.
