Lent & Easter at Southminster

Lent is a special time for followers of Jesus as we remember his life, his death, and ultimately his resurrection! Lent lasts for 40 days and ends on Easter. During this season followers of Jesus often emphasize spiritual practices such as fasting, prayer, reflection, and repentance.

We encourage you to take advantage of the following opportunities to grow in your faith during this season.

All activities for Lent and Holy Week meeting at Southminster are suspended until further notice due to COVID 19 restrictions.

Check back in the following weeks for updates.

  • Daily Devotionals: February 26th - April 12th

During Lent SPC church members, leaders and pastors write daily devotionals to help us grow in faith and center ourselves on God. Join our email list to receive these devotionals.

  • Ash Wednesday Service: February 26th @ 9:30 AM or 7:00 PM

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent. During this service we remember how fragile our life is, and how we are dust and one day we will return to dust. It's a service that is usually more solemn in nature.

At Southminster each person has the chance to receive the Imposition of the Ashes, which means to have ashes marked on your forehead (or hand) in the shape of a cross as a reminder of our calling to follow the same path as Jesus.

We will have a 9:30 AM service in the Sanctuary that is open to all, but Southminster School students will also join us. The 7:00 PM service will be open to all as well.

  • Palm Sunday: Sunday, April 5th @ 10:30 AM

On Palm Sunday we remember Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem for the last time. During this service the children process into the Sanctuary waiving the palm branches and lay them at the front as they sing, "Hosanna!"

  • Maundy Thursday: Thursday, April 9th @ 7:00 PM

On Maundy Thursday we remember the Last Supper, Jesus' last meal with his disciples before he was arrested. During this service we join in communion together, and the service ends with the stripping of the altar as we prepare for Good Friday.

  • Good Friday: Friday, April 10th @ 7:00 PM

On Good Friday we remember the last, and most painful, part of Jesus' journey to the cross. During this service we hear the stories of Jesus' last hours on earth leading up to his crucifixion, and the service ends with Jesus being nailed to the cross. We remember that death did not have the final say on that day, and we prepare to look toward Easter.

  • Pancake Breakfast: Saturday, April 12th @ 8:30 AM

Jesus is alive! Join us to celebrate this good news. We'll begin with a pancake breakfast (pancakes, sausage, juice) in the courtyard followed by Easter crafts in the Choir Room (next to the Sanctuary in the church building). Bring your phones and cameras for picture opportunities!

We'll have 3 Easter Egg Hunts! Please bring your own baskets. We will begin with younger kids first.

    • Preschool (4 YO & below( on the toddler playground in the courtyard. These eggs will contain animal crackers and goldfish.
    • Pre-K-2nd Grade on the Transportation Highway playground (back side of the school).
    • 3rd Grade-5th Grade on the field and large playground.
  • Easter Services - Sunday, April 12th @ 7:00 AM & 10:30 AM

Jesus is ALIVE! Join us for worship as we declare that Jesus has resurrected and sin has been defeated!

At 7:00 AM we'll gather on our front lawn (on the labyrinth) for our Sunrise Service as we remember that the Son rose on Easter morning. This service will be shorter than our typical service, but just as meaningful. *No childcare provided during this service.

At 10:30 AM we'll gather to celebrate Jesus' resurrection in our Sanctuary. Join us for a special day of singing, praising and testifying to what God has done through Jesus Christ. Our nursery (0-35 months) will be open for this service, and we will have an exciting Easter lesson for preschool kids (3 YO - Bridge) in the Puppies & Kittens room in the preschool hallway.
